The innovation · The Shield
Engineered acoustics
instead of electronics.
The Shield is a passive filter module we’re developing for the earmuff, built from precision-engineered acoustic structures. One module, two jobs: cut harmful noise and keep speech intelligible. Nothing to charge, no electronics to fail.
How it works
Orange is the speech band, where voices live. We aim to keep speech intelligible. Grey is the grinder, the hammer, the compressor. We aim to cut it hard. Illustrative design target, not measured data.
300–600 kr
target price per pair. Electronic level-dependent muffs typically cost 1 000–4 500 kr.

Protection comes off to talk.
Many workers don’t reject hearing protection; they reject losing communication with colleagues, and missing warnings and alarms. So the muffs come off, or a cup gets lifted, every time someone needs to talk. Neither of today’s options solves that, as the comparison below shows. The safest hearing protection is the one workers actually keep on.
Three ways to protect hearing at work.
A plain comparison. The Shield is still in development, so its column describes what we’re designing for, not test results.
Passive
Conventional passive muffs
- Noise
- Cut it.
- Speech
- Muffled along with the noise, so the muffs often come off to talk.
- Power
- None needed.
- Extras
- None.
- Price
- Usually the cheapest option.
Electronic
Electronic level-dependent muffs
- Noise
- Cut it.
- Speech
- Microphones and speakers pass surrounding sound through at a safe level. Some can also amplify quiet sounds.
- Power
- Batteries to charge or replace, and electronics that can fail.
- Extras
- Some add radio or Bluetooth.
- Price
- Typically 1 000–4 500 kr.

The Shield, our design target
- Noise
- Designed to cut harmful noise.
- Speech
- Designed to keep speech intelligible, without electronics. It does not amplify quiet sounds.
- Power
- None. No batteries, no electronics.
- Extras
- No radio or Bluetooth.
- Price
- Target: 300–600 kr per pair.

Where we are
Concept stage, and keen to talk.
We’re at the concept stage, developing The Shield. There’s nothing to buy yet. If you run a noisy workplace, buy safety equipment, or want to follow the work, we’d like to hear from you.
